Understanding Inflammation

Types of Inflammation  

      Rapid (minutes to hours)
        Short-lived (days to weeks)

  • Neutrophils
  • Usually resolves, leads to healing, or progresses to chronic inflammation
  • Slow (days to months)
  • Prolonged (weeks, months, or years)
  • Macrophages, lymphocytes, plasma cells
  • Tissue destruction, fibrosis, necrosis, often associated with disease

Causes of Inflammation

  • Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites.
  • Cuts, burns, sprains, fractures.
  • Pollutants, chemicals, allergens.
  • The immune system mistakenly attacks healthy body tissues (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, lupus).
  • Obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer.
  • High intake of processed foods, unhealthy fats, sugar.
  • Chronic psychological stress can contribute to inflammation.

Signs and Symptoms of Inflammation

  • Caused by increased blood flow to the inflamed area.
  • Also due to increased blood flow.
  • Resulting from the accumulation of fluid and immune cells.
  • Caused by the release of chemicals that stimulate nerve endings.
  • The impaired ability of the affected tissue or organ to function normally.

Management and Treatment

  • To allow the affected area to heal.
  • To reduce swelling and pain.
  • To reduce fluid accumulation.
  • To help reduce swelling
  • Treating the root cause (e.g., managing an autoimmune disease, treating an infection).
  • Emphasizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats while limiting processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats.
  • Can help reduce systemic inflammation.
  • Techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing.
  • Essential for overall health and immune function.
  • Prescription anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, or immunosuppressants, depending on the condition.
